How FreshSight has helped Companions turn a Grassroots Initiative into a Scalable Programme to End Elderly Loneliness.

Tackling the Epidemic of Loneliness in the Elderly.

4.5 million people report feeling lonely in their later life (Companions, 2021). Companions was founded to respond to that quiet reality with something deeply human: a handwritten letter. At Christmas, over 1 million older people experience loneliness (Age UK, 2024), and 17,000 older people in Wales will not receive a card or a present at Christmas (Age Cymru, 2025). In response to this, Companions founded its most successful initiative - the Christmas Card Appeal, which distributes thousands of cards for those who would otherwise not receive them.

Launched in 2021 in partnership with Age Connects Morgannwg, Companions began as a small, community-led pen pal initiative. The idea resonated immediately. What started locally quickly became something bigger, but growth brought new challenges.

By 2025, Companions had gained significant traction; yet, the organisation faced a familiar crossroads for grassroots initiatives. Demand was rising faster than capacity, volunteer engagement was inconsistent, administrative resources were stretched thin, and visibility beyond the local area remained limited. Companions knew the impact was there, but it needed a strategy to grow sustainably while preserving the heart of its mission.

That’s where FreshSight came in. Companions partnered with FreshSight for a 9-week project from January to April 2025

Our Approach.

Working closely with Companions' leadership to understand their specific needs, FreshSight’s client outreach and onboarding team identified three priority areas for the project:

  1. Marketing & Outreach: increase visibility and reach new demographics

  2. Partnerships: build long-term school, care home, and umbrella organisation relationships

  3. Funding: diversify grant pipelines and create a sustainable financial model

A team of five student consultants then developed and delivered practical tools and recommendations to support Companions’ work across these three areas.

“The best thing about the project was that the recommendations and tools we received were completely tailored to us. We were able to implement them without any additional support, and they will continue to be useful as we grow.”

The FreshSight team began by assessing how different audiences engaged with the charity and developed a marketing approach that balanced digital visibility with targeted, in-person outreach. This included recommendations to build a stronger presence across social media platforms, alongside continued promotion through community hubs and local networks, where word-of-mouth plays a key role.

To support delivery, FreshSight created practical, ready-to-use marketing templates and feedback forms to simplify communications and reduce administrative burden. These tools were designed to help Companions better understand both volunteers’ and participants’ experiences, while enabling small operational improvements without additional cost.

FreshSight also supported Companions to build on the success of Companions’ existing Christmas Card Appeal, allowing them to continue the appeal's success and create new initiatives to replicate its success year-round. The team helped design a seasonal postcard campaign and provided clear guidance and templates to support its delivery at a low cost. Additionally, FreshSight developed resources to help Companions work more effectively with schools, including toolkits and partnership materials to support longer-term collaboration. Finally, FreshSight strengthened Companions’ funding approach by developing a custom grant-tracking tool to support application planning and deadline management. This introduced a more structured and strategic approach to funding, while reducing the administrative burden on Companions, allowing the team to focus more time on delivering and scaling the initiative.

What We Delivered.

“The team’s deliverables were practical and easy to interpret, which is very important for an initiative like ours, where time is so valuable ”

Our Impact.

By implementing clearer marketing strategies, establishing effective partnership pathways, and developing scalable operational tools, FreshSight enabled Companions to convert momentum into measurable growth. The impact was most visible in the 2025 Christmas Card Appeal, where the number of cards sent increased from 5,108 to 5,732 from 2024 to 2025, reaching 1,500 older people across 50 care homes and 7 hospitals in 2025.

Beyond the appeal itself, Companions’ strengthened outreach and clearer brand positioning, moving away from deficit-based loneliness messaging towards a focus on connection and companionship, further increased engagement and take-up.  Supported wider organisational growth: since working with FreshSight, the charity has supported 77 older clients in total, including 31 new clients, bringing the number of live clients to 54, while volunteer numbers grew by 46% since FreshSight worked with Companions.

Improved communications also unlocked national visibility, including coverage on BBC Wales TV, BBC Radio Wales, and a BBC News online feature (BBC Wales News, 2025). Companions have also received recognition from Chris Bryant MP, Lord Aberdare, and Alex Davies-Jones. Rhodri reflects, “Since working with FreshSight, our communication and engagement with media has significantly improved,” underscoring how the foundations laid during the project directly enabled Companions’ growth, credibility, and long-term sustainability.
